K-112 at Gibraltar
Blimp Squadron 14 was deployed to Port Lyautey, French Morocco to provide magnetic anomaly detection barrier night patrols in the Straits of Gibraltar. Daylight MAD patrols were made by fixed wing planes, but because of the extremely low altitude required by these operations, VPB-63 patrol planes were unable to make the night flights. On June 10, 1944 two airships made the first night barrier patrols. By July 1, six airships were available for the barrier operation. On June 18, K-112 made the first landing of an American airship in Europe since World War I and the first landing ever of an American-built airship in Europe. |
