U.S. Navy Non-Rigid Airships: G-1
The G-1, a 183,000 cubic foot airship, procured from the Goodyear Aircraft Company after six years in commercial service, was delivered to Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, New Jersey on October 5, 1935 and served in utility and training functions. On the night of June 8-9, 1942 it collided with the L-2 off the New Jersey coast. Both airships were destroyed. 12 of 13 crewmen and civilian scientists perished. |
