"They Were Dependable "

On June 16, 1942 the day after two American tankers, Robert C. Tuttle and Kingston were sunk by mines off Virginia Beach, bringing the total sinkings by U-boats in the Atlantic and adjacent waters to 272 merchant ships, the U.S. Congress responded to the brazen attacks by authorizing the construction of 200 Naval airships. During World War II K-ships patrolled the shipping lanes off the coasts of North and South America and escorted 89,000 merchant vessels without the loss of a single ship!
